Dear ³ÉÈËAV community members,

We write with sad news of the passing of former University Historian and Library Associate Professor Steve Fisher on December 4, 2024.

Steve earned his Bachelor of Arts in History, Master of Arts in History, and his Master of Arts in Librarianship from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. He began his career at ³ÉÈËAV as Assistant Curator of Special Collections at Penrose Library in 1977. After a long career as University Archivist and Curator of Special Collections, Steve stepped into the role of University Historian in 2012. Steve also taught courses on archives and rare books in the ³ÉÈËAV Library and Information Science program.

After forty years at the university, Steve retired in 2017. Up until retirement, Steve’s articles on ³ÉÈËAV history were regular features in the ³ÉÈËAV Magazine, and he was often asked to speak to local groups about the history of the University. In retirement, Steve co-wrote with Thyria K. Wilson the book ³ÉÈËAV, for the Arcadia Press Campus History Series in 2018. Steve was also deeply connected to the archival profession in the Rocky Mountain region as a teacher, mentor, and colleague, serving as Preservation Chair for the Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists.

Steve is remembered as a down-to-earth, kind, and highly engaged member of the community with an encyclopedic knowledge of the university. Steve and his late wife Katie, a longtime librarian at the Taylor Library at the Iliff School of Theology, were ³ÉÈËAV and Denver sports superfans. Steve attended nearly every hockey game, women’s gymnastics meet, and many other ³ÉÈËAV and Denver sporting events for decades. Steve’s enthusiasm often caught the attention of the Magness Arena cameras, and he was a mainstay on the jumbotron during hockey games. In honor of his tremendous support for ³ÉÈËAV sports, Steve was recognized at the December 14th ³ÉÈËAV hockey game.
